El ministro de Asuntos Exteriores de México, Marcelo Ebrard, ha informado que el número de migrantes que llegan a la frontera con Estados Unidos ha disminuido un 40 por ciento desde el pasado mes de mayo. Según los cálculos del Gobierno mexicano, 87.648 personas habrían llegado a la frontera entre los dos países en julio. Esto representa una caída del 39,5 por ciento en comparación con los 144.278 migrantes registrados en mayo. El aumento de las detenciones en la frontera sur de Estados Unidos durante los primeros meses de 2019 llevó al Gobierno de Trump a amenazar al Gobierno mexicano con imponer tarifas sobre las exportaciones si México no contenía el flujo migratorio en mayor medida. Las autoridades mexicanas han desplegado desde entonces miles de agentes de la recién creada Guardia Nacional para disminuir la entrada de migrantes y evitar que el territorio se convierta en un "tercer país seguro".
